Food intolerance - Gluten / Wheat free products?!?
Posted by: admin / Category: food intolerance testI have a feeling i may have a food intolerance of some kind and am going to attempt to find out what i could be intolerant too (possibly could be wheat or lactose).
Im just a bit confused - Do products that state they are 'gluten free' also mean that they are wheat free? Is it the same thing?
I was thinking about possibly going to the doctor but dont want to risk going there and coming out feeling stupid if they say they cant do any tests to find out whether i have a wheat or milk intolerance!
Any help would be great
Hi,call your doctor and ask for the following blood tests. They use these to screen for celiac. I am not sure what they are called in the UK. Please get the bloodwork done before you begin any elimination diet, by the way!
The tests are:
Anti-tissue Transglutaminase Antibody (tTG),
Anti-Gliadin Antibodies (AGA), IgG and IgA

As for lactose intolerance, there is a breath test they can do. You want to rule out celiac first because many celiacs are lactose intolerant in the beginning because lactase is produced in the tips of the villi and people with active celiac don't have those!
Good luck, hope this helped. Just so you know, in the US wheat starch is right out. Oatmeal is actually fine as long as it is certified gluten free (e.g. Bob's Red Mill). Regular oats are usually contaminated during harvest, transport,or processing, thus making it not ok for celaics and allergics. But the cert. gf ones are fine.
And Pedro, I got glutened with wheat sugar that was not claimed as such in a jam produced in Canada.Total misery for 3 days. You need to not push the "allowed ingredients" envelope with your (oops) daughter's health. There are plenty of other sugar options out there, please be vigilant and do not use those questionable products! Stick to the 200 ppm limit for him! Blessings!
Hey Pedro, glad your daughter's ok. Just be careful, ok? My bloodwork came back elevated after eating that product, so be careful of Canadian jams, ok? lol! I think the facility is really key to whether you get glutened or not. You just never know, which is really the point. You were simply lucky, nothing more, nothing less. How far do you really want to push it? Good luck to you all!
p.s. Gluten free is wheat free simply because wheat contains gluten so is excluded, but it does not work the other way around. (unless they are using products like wheat grass or wheat sugar, which is gf in theory, but is a ridiculous claim since there is no way I can see to avoid gluten cross contam. with those products!)
Wheat free products can have barley, rye, triticale, spelt, kamut or any of the other grains containing gluten and are not likely gluten free. (If you see malt, it is not gf, that is barley)
