For you, does having a food allergy immediately remove a dog from breeding?
Posted by: admin / Category: food allergySay your pup has been itching, etc and has been diagnosed with an allergy to chicken. So you put him on a lamb food, and all is well. He finishes his CH easily, passes the working instinct test with flying colors, has great OFA, CERF, etc scores.
Do you breed him, even though he has an allergy to chicken?
This is just a hypothetical, I don’t know any dogs like this
That is a very good question. Allergies are now recognized to have a heritable trait and because they do impact the quality of life and can be expensive to diagnose and treat, they are something a breeder needs to carefully consider before breeding.
Keep in mind that unless your dog has been tested for specific allergies, the diagnosis may not be correct, so it wouldn’t be wise to eliminate the dog based on a vet’s guess work rather than an actual test.
