Severe food intolerance?

Posted by: admin  /  Category: food intolerance

i am at a loss. my girl papillon whom i have had for 3 years has SEVERE food intolerance. she has been on and off (mostly on) steroids the entire time trying to get her bowel disease under control. she has been on venison, duck, rabbit, bison, commercial vegetarian, black beans and sweet potatoes, and now emu and millet.

every time we have tried to ween her off the steroids, she vomits. when she is on them she is fine. she is currently seeing an internist and a holistic vet. we recently changed her diet to emu and millet because she stopped eating the black beans and sweet potatoes. it was a sudden diet change because she had stoped eating. she has been on the new diet for 5 days and started having diarrhea 2 days ago. her internist thinks the diarrhea is because her bowel disease is still not controlled but in the past when she has immediatley reacted to a food she vomited. her current therapies include budesonide 1mg, prilosec 5mg, an herbal concoction
that is from her holistic vet, and now metronidazole (added today by internist).

has anyone else delt with severe food intolerance? our goal is to get her off the steroids for good.
the holistic vet we are using is very known and is an excellent doctor. she was tolerating the black beans and sweet potatoes just fine but she stopped eating it. as in did not want it anymore, would only pick at it…

yes, she has had extensive blood work run, has been tested for cushings, has had a tli, pli, b12, folate, has been endoscoped, had intestinal biopsies done, xrays, ultrasounds, fecals…you name it she has had it.

i started taking her to the holistic vet only a little over a month ago to see if we were missing anything in my dogs treatment.
also, we have tried raw diets with her. no luck.

hi Bob,
First off let me tell you I had to let my lovely girl go to doggie
heaven 27.10.07 after the tumour had grown to much..
anyway aside from the food intolerance have you some how (don't know how) checked her emotional side I feel that she frets alot which also maybe upsetting her system, she feels like she is a soul that needs a lot of attention to feel happy.
Don't know if this helps, I feel that she was a rescued dog??

I would question this holistic vet..do you know his credentials? Seriously, if your dog was able to tolerate the sweet potatoes and beans, then suddenly couldnt anymore, i would strongly guess its not just food intolerance, there's something wrong, has she had full blood panals done??

her not wanting to eat is what i meant. i mean, if she was tolerating the black beans and sweet potatoes, then suddenly just stops eating, most dogs dont do that unless its really bad food, even finicky eaters i guess i never heard of a case where theyd rather starve than eat..esp on the steroids..

I'm sorry i dont have better reply. At least that holistic vet is a good one.

i only know dogster to ask besides here but maybe youd have better luck there http://www.dogster.com/forums/Food_and_Nutrition

Speak with your vet about raw. A member of the group I'm in also had a dog who could not tolerate any form of kibble. He vomited even with steroids though so it may not be the same cause. Diarrhea is actually fairly normal for sudden diet changes and will normally clear up within a week. However during that time you need to be extra cautious about keeping her hydrated. Good luck, I hope she gets better.

I had this issue with my foundation b*tch about 10 years ago. She lived with my sister and was initially fed a high grade of kibble (Wysong) when she first had the issue. We did every test under the sun… also did the prilosec, steroids, special diets and eventually even used a G-I tube with a puppy formula because the veterinary specialist was adamant that if we could give her intestines a rest she would recover. Eventually, after 20 lbs of weight loss, and severe weakness we opted to euthanize her. Her autopsy revealed a small dimesized cancer in her small intestine.

Following this I had a long conversation with the University's veterinary oncologist… who told me that he's seen a dramatic increase cancers since the advent of high quality low residue dog foods. His theory was that dogs were not getting enough roughage through their systems. I already had all my dogs on raw and have continued that without any further issues.

I don't know that any of that information helps you.. but perhaps, if things get bad enough a G-I tube might be an answer.
