A food allergy is when the immune system attacks the protiens in foods. An intolerence is just something that makes you feel sick; you just have a bad reaction to the food.

Some doctors don't think food allergies are allergies, but whether it's and allergy or an intolerance, some people have reactions to certain foods or chemicals that don't fit into the class of hay fever, hives and skin problems.
Some people react to foods with mood swings, headaches, or inability to process information correctly. And there are some people who cannot tolerate hair spray, perfumes, or plastics, or gas or diesel fumes.
Whatever they want to call it, these things cause reactions that can be a major problem.
I would very much like to know how many doctors believe such a thing is possible in 2006. In 1970, few accepted such a possibility.

A food allergy will show up on allergy sensitivity tests. A food intolerance will not show up on allergy tests and it usually causes digestive problems. A food allergy may start within minutes; a food intolerance may take up to 12 hours before a reaction starts. Either one can make you very sick.
